Batten Screws

Blackhawk Batten Screws are built tough for Australian tradies and the demanding conditions they work in. Developed by ITI, Australia’s largest timber and composite decking supplier with over 38 years of industry experience, these screws are the result of deep knowledge and real-world insight. Every detail—from thread design to coating—has been engineered to deliver strength, durability, and ease of use on-site. Backed by decades of decking expertise, Blackhawk Screws are the reliable choice for your next project.

Material

The screw material is one of the most important factors when making your purchasing decision. Getting this wrong can have a huge impact on the strength and durability of your project.

An externally rated corrosion method, Class 3 Galvanised fasteners can be used in general outdoor applications.

  • Externally rated
  • Matte silver finish

Class 3 rated fasteners are not recommended for applications within 5km of breaking surf or in close proximity to swimming pools.

Blackhawk Protect is a high-grade, tri-layer coating process. These layers are joined together through a chemical process which results in a tightly bonded coating on the screw. Along with conforming to AS 3566.2 Class 3, Blackhawk Protect has advantages like:

  • Superior corrosion (rust) resistance over non coated/galvanised fasteners
  • The unique layering process reduces any damage to the coating if the screw is scratched
  • Less risk of premature corrosion due to reactions with other metal types

Blackhawk Protect, like all class 3 equivalents, is not recommended for applications within 5km of breaking surf or in close proximity to swimming pools.

304 Stainless Steel is one of the most common materials used for fasteners. 304 Stainless Steel:

  • Protects the screw from corrosion in most external applications
  • Has an attractive silver finish
  • Is the material of choice for most decking professionals

304 Stainless Steel is not recommended for applications within 1km of breaking surf or in close proximity to swimming pools.

304 Extreme Stainless Steel has an improved formula when compared to standard 304 Stainless Steel. This results in a higher level of corrosion resistance. 304 Extreme Stainless Steel:

  • Protects the screw from corrosion in most external applications
  • Has an attractive silver finish
  • Has greater corrosion protection than standard 304 Stainless Steel

304 Extreme Stainless Steel is not recommended for applications within 1km of breaking surf or in close proximity to swimming pools.

Drive Type

The drive type will determine what driver bit you will need and how much grip it has with the screw.

5MM INTERNAL HEX

The internal hex drive is a large drive type that is capable of high torque applications. The large amount of surface area reduces the risk of cam-out* . The “5mm” refers to the size of the driver bit.

Point Type

The point of the screw will determine what it is capable of screwing through. The screw point that you use will be dependent on the material you are using for your project and if you are pre-drilling. Different species of timber have different hardness levels. This will determine the need for pre-drilling. It is best practice to test the screws on an off-cut to ensure the desired result is achieved. It is recommended that you always pre-drill the ends of decking boards as they are prone to splitting.

TYPE 17 POINT

Type 17 refers to the long, cut section at the point of the screw.

  • Helps to remove debris when being driven through timber
  • Reduces the need to pre-drill into softwood timber

Head Type

Choosing the right head type can have a big impact on the overall finish of the screw n your deck, some heads are better suited to certain wood types and careful consideration should be made to ensure you get the right head for your screw.

BUGLE HEAD

The bugle-shaped head reduces the amount of damage to the material when countersinking.

Blackhawk Screw Calculators

Decking screws come in a range of sizes and materials. It is important that you choose the right screw for your project. Blackhawk have designed a calculator to help choose the right screw for you.
